One of our clients who runs the website www.paediatricregistrar.co.uk came to us last year needing some help with making changes to his Joomla 1.0-based website, which had been developed by another designer. We assisted in making those changes, however we also advised him that Joomla 1.0 had been superceded by Joomla 1.5 and that it might be advisable for him to upgrade.
With Joomla 1.0 reaching end of live on July 22nd 2009 he came back to us to ask us to go ahead with upgrading his site from 1.0 to 1.5. As well as basic pages his site also had the DocMan document download manager component installed so to upgrade his site we had to do the following:
- Create a new Joomla 1.5 installation
- Migrate all existing content from his existing site (including the DocMan component) into the new site and verify.
- Convert his site template from one that is compatible with Jooma 1.5
Once this was done the website looked basically the same as it always had although it was now based on Joomla 1.5 and therefore was easier to update and also more secure since it would still be updated as and when neccessary by the Joomla team. The client also took the opportunity to add new features to his site including a forum (courtesy of Kunena forum) and a gallery (courtesy of JoomGallery) and we also moved him from DocMan (which hadn’t been updated and would only run in legacy mode) to JoomDoc, a newer release which was based on the original DocMan component.
Do you have a site that is still running in Joomla 1.0? If so it is advisable that you have it migrated to Joomla 1.5 as soon as possible as your site will no longer be supported in terms of security release and updates and this could compromise your site now and in the future. Please contact us for more information on how we can help you upgrade to Joomla 1.5.
