SITE LAUNCH: Atlas Lettings Property Rentals

Monday, June 1st, 2009 by Arcas Computing

We are proud to announce the launch of our latest site, http://www.atlaslettingsedinburgh.co.uk!

The site is for a newly-established property management company based in Edinburgh who wanted a powerful and simple-to-update site on a restricted budget.  We used Joomla 1.5 alongside the Hot Properties plugin to achieve this and included some customisation of the basic package including:

  • Custom templates for the property pages
  • Extension of the built-in fields plus adaptation of the search facility to allow for these fields to be searched on
  • Addition of feature whereby the admins can choose the rental status of a property and have a “LET” banner overlaid over the images of the property dynamically
  • Installation of more advanced contact form with spam checking

Feel free to check out the site and let us know what you think!

SITE LAUNCH: Dempsey Sails The World!

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009 by Arcas Computing

We have just launched a new website at http://www.dempseysailstheworld.com which is actually one we did for free.  Free?!  Yes, for free!

The reason for this is that we were approached by Craig, who is about to embark on a solo circumnavigation of the world and all in the name of charity.  He contacted us to see if we would help him in creating a simple website for his project and we did one better than that by providing him with a fully-featured content managed site that allows him to post to a blog we set up on the site for him from whereever he might be in the world (and, considering what he is doing, that could be anywhere!)

The site also allows people to donate to him as well as get in touch with him with messages of support and well-wishes.

You can view the site at http://www.dempseysailstheworld.com - good luck to Craig!

SITE LAUNCH: Gourmet Kebabs/Abrakebabra

Friday, May 15th, 2009 by Arcas Computing

We were approached by the owner of a new gourmet kebab shop opening in Edinburgh to provide them with an updateable website on a tight budget and very tight timescale and we were only too happy to oblige!

The customer provided us with the site design/layout which allowed us to create the site more quickly and from start to finish the entire project took around 7 working days (including revisions and launch).  The site features their menus and details of the restaurant as well as a contact form to allow customers to get in touch.

Check it out here - http://www.gourmetkebabs.com/

SITE LAUNCH: ASME.org.uk

Sunday, April 26th, 2009 by Arcas Computing

In one of our biggest site launches to date we are proud to present the brand-new website for the Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME)!

Based upon the Joomla 1.5 CMS, this site not only features a large number of pages which give details on the organisation’s conferences and courses but also allows people to book their place on those courses online as well as to join the organisation via the website.  In addition it features a fully-comprehensive ecommerce system (based upon the Virtuemart plugin) which allows them to sell their Understanding Medical Education series of booklets via the site.  Here’s the full list of features:

  • Advanced forms for allowing site visitors to register for conferences and courses including one with custom javascript code to calculate the total they are due.  All form data is stored in the database as well as being emailed to the site admins
  • Online payment processing by Worldpay for both booking forms (members and courses) and the ecommerce system
  • Fully-featured ecommerce system with custom postal rates and charges and an easy-to-track order process
  • Abstract submission forms which allow users to upload their own documents which are then emailed to site admins
  • A search facility which indexes PDFs as well as all site content and includes the relevant results in any searches performed

This site is a great example of how you can quickly and easily build a very powerful site by using Joomla and its various plugins.  If you like the sound of the features we have listed here or would like to find out more then feel free to get in touch with us about it!

View the site at http://www.asme.org.uk.

SITE LAUNCH: Flotsam and Jetsam

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009 by Arcas Computing

A new website for a puppet theatre company based in Edinburgh and putting on shows for kids young and old, the design was brought to us by the client and we built a Joomla-backed website based upon this.

The site has several pages plus we’ve made use of the Forms for Joomla component which means that any time their contact form is filled out it is thoroughly checked first before submission.  There’s no nasty CAPTCHA code here, just a simple lookup of the email address to check that it exists before any form is allowed to be submitted - this should hopefully drastically cut down on any spam that they might receive.

The site also has downloadable PDfs of show information and posters - go check it out now!

NEW PROJECT: Fastglass Direct

Monday, January 12th, 2009 by Arcas Computing

Arcas has been commissioned to create a new ecommerce site for Donside Heating Supplies’ FASTGLASS Replacement Stove Glass service.

The site will be built using Joomla 1.5 alongside the Virtuemart ecommerce plugin and will allow customers to view the various makes and models of replacement glass they offer.  In addition to most of the standard shopping functions, we will also be doing some custom development including:

  • Referral tracking: the clients wants to be able to know where people buying products on their site have come from so we will modify the site to record the original referring URL (if there is one) and save this whenever they place an order.
  • Custom calculator: the clients to be able to offer customers the ability to enter custom sizes of the glass they need and have the site calculate the total cost on their behalf.

NEW PROJECT: Universal Procurement

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008 by Arcas Computing

We have just received a commission from an Edinburgh-based startup company called Universal Procurement, located in the heart of the city centre, to construct a new website  for them.

The site will be a Joomla-based brochure site to begin with, featuring basic information on the business, its core services and its staff and since it is based upon the Joomla system, it will of course all be user-updateable!

We will begin work on the design stage before the end of this week so look out for more information over the coming weeks, with a pre-Xmas launch on the cards.

Are you interested in being able to update your own site or would you like a site built that you can quickly and easily maintain yourself?  Then why not contact us about getting a Joomla-based site yourself?

NEW PROJECT: ASME.org.uk

Thursday, November 6th, 2008 by

Arcas Computing had just won the contract for the redesign (and rebuild) of the website for the Association for the Study of Medical Education which will be basing up the Joomla open-source CMS.

The site is going to be fairly extensive (with several hundred pages of information) and will feature information about the organisation, provide facilities to join and renew memberships as well as to order their various publications and reserve slots at the conferences and courses that they provide.  It will be neccessary to make use of Joomla plugins to index their PDFs as well as to create custom forms which will handle the eccomerce side of things in conjunction with a third-party payment provider such as World Pay.

Development is expected to take several months including testing and debugging with an early 2009 launch expected.
